Abstract

This study examines the relationship between population growth and energy
consumption in Nigeria between 1970 and 20ll. The main focus is on the impact of
demographic changes and urbanisation on energy consumption. Energy consumption
was regressed on domestic income, crude oil price, industrial output, change in
population, and rate of urbanisation. The long run and short run relationship between
energy consumption and all explanatory variables were estimated through the ARDL
approach. It was found that population growth and urbanisation have significant
positive effects on energy consumption. From this study, it can be inferred that
population and urbanisation rates are major determinants of successful energy
planning and conservative policy in Nigeria
